So as to keep the implementation time frame especially short, a maximum of seven months, the architect Philippe Guilbert had the clever idea of separating this building, measuring almost 2000 m2, into several volumes: the two main ones, the sports complex, with its wooden structure and cladding, and the cultural space, clad in terracotta, could thus be constructed in parallel before being connected by the main hall, all in concrete, and its vegetated roof. Made up of multiple volumes with different scales bringing conviviality and lightness, the cultural space gives the impression of three houses with gabled roofs that have been interlocked to form a whole. Houses with simple lines on which the architect has placed a terracotta veil made of Champagne-coloured Piterak Slim. This descends smoothly from the roof to the facade, like a protective halo. With a delicate presence, this matte coating is enlivened by some Umber-coloured accents. Freed from all rhythm, these glazed notes contrast with the whole, presenting the viewer with a trompe l’oeil moucharaby, a subtle echo of the voids deliberately left in the roof for natural ventilation of the multi-activity centre. Refinement in its raw state.

Mondonville multi-activity hall
Terracotta, concrete and wood: the project involving the Mondonville multi-activity centre, in the Toulouse region, anchors its identity in a raw and natural materiality, the intrinsic sobriety of which contrasts with the delicacy of the architectural style.

InterviewPhilippe Guilbert, architect
“Here we wanted to treat the various volumes in a monolithic manner, with natural materials of a raw character, without any decorations or gimmicks. We were able to rely on Terreal from the design phase onwards to verify the feasibility and technical details during realisation of this unusual project with continuous terracotta cladding on the facade and roof. This support reassured us that we were making the right choices. It is very valuable. Terracotta is present in around a third of our projects. We like the idea of developing Toulouse’s identity through the contemporary use of terracotta, all the while respecting its original nature. In my opinion, it is vital that the architectural considerations integrate the intrinsic technical qualities of this material, particularly its insulating properties. Believing that terracotta boils down to merely its aesthetic dimension would be reductive. It is a material that can satisfy many architects’ aspirations and is equally a source of inspiration. Thanks to its varied dimensions and the multiple ways in which it can be used, it can be adapted to any type of building, on a small or large scale.”
