The designers of 67 Southwark Street overcame this structural restriction brilliantly by designing triangular apartments, twelve metres wide on the largest side and just four metres wide at the other end. Each unit occupies an entire floor, with panoramic views over London. On the top floor, there is a large, original terrace for communal use.
This extremely well-thought-out building also fits cleverly into its environment, establishing a pleasing connection between the modestly-sized four to five-storey blocks on Union Street and the buildings opposite Southwark Street, including the ten floors of Bankside 2 & 3 as well as the even taller buildings of NEO Bankside and the Tate Modern. The overall effect is balanced, through the horizontal regularity of its brown and cream layout of MAAX 49cm long-length terracotta bricks. These stripes lend structure to each floor and add a sculptural dimension to the building. The wide, ultra-simple and regularly-spaced openings offer a welcome counterpoint to the overall originality.
Use of terracotta gives the building a feeling of solidity and permanency. This material also instils an historic link with the large industrial building that once occupied this area. 67 Southwark Street is exceptional in every respect, unquestionably bringing a touch of true uniqueness to the regenerated Bankside area.

Residential houses London
The sixteen-floor building designed by Allies and Morrison exudes a rare elegance and is mesmerising to look at. Tall, thin and slender, it fits perfectly on a particularly sharp, tight corner, a stone’s throw from the Thames.

“This project’s location is just a few cables’ length from our studios on Southwark Street. The terracotta and height of the building refer back to the local industrial heritage. We wanted to use long-length MAAX bricks to create a consistent minimalist language throughout the building, conveying a philosophy of simplicity and practicality. Clay is also a strong, durable material, which allows us to achieve the simple, repetitive details we designed for the project. Its natural colouring makes it an elegant material that goes well with a great many styles.”
