Simpson Haugh Architects in Manchester came up with the idea of texturing the façade of the building using a subtle strategy for orienting and positioning the bricks. The aim was to create a playground for the daylight to allow it to express its full range of reflections and colours. Without question, the 500 students who will soon be lucky enough to drop anchor in Hill Court will be able to enjoy this moving and creative spectacle.

Gleaming glazed terracotta in 3-D: Hill Court is clad in light
The word of
Simpson Haugh and Partners, Architect
InterviewJonathan Mallinson, architect of Hill Court student hall of residence, said:
“Robust, strong and good-looking… Like many of my colleagues, I really like terracotta because of these natural, intrinsic qualities. There are no nasty surprises with this material and it lets you achieve attractive results really easily, much more easily than using products with finishes.. And, what's more, it's a durable material that won't let projects down over time! Our firm has often used terracotta products in its designs. In the case of this student hall of residence, our aim was to clad the building in a façade that was "in a state of movement". We straight away thought of the idea of playing with different three-dimensional effects so as to create a sense of dynamism and catch the light. For this project, we settled on Terreal glazed bricks which met all our technical, visual and price requirements. It was a big commission as there was 3800 m² of façade to cover. It was the first time that we had worked with Terreal... and we weren't disappointed! We had a specific colour in mind and Terreal's R&D team were able to replicate it perfectly. I think that this first collaboration will mark the beginning of a long partnership... Indeed, we have already contacted the company several times since then!
