Amongst the limited and simple palette of materials chosen for the elevation treatment for this development, the architects used terracotta rainscreen tiles to contrast and complement the other specified materials, such as the pitch faced concrete blocks, clay bricks, metal rainscreen cladding, powder-coated aluminium curtain walling and zinc clad standing seam roofs. These materials echo the sympathetic design of the buildings and suit this sensitive site, and characteristics of the local area.
In conjunction with the other materials used, the terracotta tiles introduce the appropriate balance, aesthetics and massing on the elevations of the new buildings.

Programme Gorse Stacks
The site of this project is opposite the Chester City Walls in an area known as Northgate, which is in the heart of the City’s Conservation Area. Due to the economic downturn, the use of the site had to be reconsidered and the design and layout of the Residential Apartments new, Health Centre and Offices was carried out in such a way as to suit the part-built existing basement.

Nightingale Associates, Architect
InterviewThe architect explain:
“We chose a patinated finish in a mid-grey colour contrasting with the red textured brickwork, laid in a random pattern with tile sizes of varying heights and widths to display the flexibility of the material. The finish and random pattern of the tiles also helped to emphasise the variation and diversity required on the elevations, without the need to introduce another material.
We feel that terracotta is a contemporary building material which offers great value and has the unique blend of quality and engineered precision with the durability and warmth of masonry.
It is also available in many colours and finishes to suit any building project and desired appearance.”
