This atypical youth hostel has a total of 450 apartments spread over three blocks: a student hall of residence, a hostel for young workers and a socially oriented residential hotel, all of which sit above 1500m2 of public space which is also open to local residents and community organizations. On the ring road side, large screen-printed glass façades join the buildings together. On the Paris side, the atmosphere is calm and private. What catches your eye here is the vivid contrast between the metallic paint applied with a knife by the craftsmen and the Terreal chocolate-brown cladding which covers two distinctive pieces of architecture, one which seems to float in the air and the other embedded in one of the blocks. Terracotta was chosen purely for its visual appeal and here provides contrast and a source of wonder. Because all observers admire the material with which these "boxes" stuck to the buildings are covered but few people guess what it is… "

Terracotta is the highlight of the Bédier ZAC

“These two elements covered with cladding punctuate the overall building and highlight distinctive aspects of the project. We have taken a rather different architectural approach of applying a detailed gridlike pattern to the blocks which house the apartments. Personally, I really like terracotta. It's a very timeless, noble, durable material which has changed over time. Although it is one of the oldest building materials, there are now many very modern ways in which it can be employed to meet contemporary uses and requirements. Its use in the Bédier ZAC project is a perfect example of this: the application is modern but its presence is historical. Indeed, all the social housing that was built in the twenties and thirties is situated between the ring road and the outer Parisian boulevards. Their architecture has an Art Deco feel with lots of bricks and terracotta. So we have brought a new interpretation to a material that already existed in the district and been simultaneously faithful to the material and a bit left-field in the way in which we have applied it!
