Moncrief Cancer Institute

Texas, in the southwestern United States, the architectural firm HKS sign the construction of the new cancer center Moncrief. Located on a site of 3.4 hectares, it includes administrative offices and research space as well as public education. It also allows to host the Community Clinic Moncrief newly created that will support cancer patients after treatment and ensure a monitoring role. For this project, more than 2 000m ² rainscreen cladding Piterak Slim Terreal were vertically installed in exterior and interior façade. The architects chose a light colour, champagne, and a random alternation of smooth and striated finishes.

A vertical terracotta rainscreen cladding

The extensive terra-cotta walls continue from the exterior into the lobby, allowing enhancing the place harmony. The interior colour palette and material selection is subtle enough not to distract patients as they transition through the spaces but to also compliment the aesthetic of the building.

The choice of architects has focused on colour 03.Champagne. This light shade can integrate more clarity and brightness, and thus help create a welcoming place for patients, employees and visitors."

On this project, Brian Ahmes, designer at HKS, said:
“The Moncrief Cancer Institute has been designed as a place where patients feel welcome through orientation, colour and unique light of the material used. The random siding terracotta and their configuration on the facades intended to calm the patients upon their arrival to the input glass lobby.
With stone being a more contextual material in Fort Worth, we tried to match the terra cotta colour to local facades. This helped us create an integrated look of brick while maintaining a contemporary façade system that performed better.
The profile of the panels was selected to create the illusion of depth when sunlight hit the building at certain times of the day. The grooved Piterak Slim rainscreen cast shadows on each panel giving a deeper recessed look.”
