An art made of bricks as suspended in the air
The bricks were indeed produced on a customised basis, with hand-worked paste, in order to match the ambitions of the architect, Roberto Murgia, and meet project requirements. Unique parts in terms of dimensions, position and the size of the attachment holes… and, on a more unexpected basis, a unique look, with the use of a special clear clay paste and a rough quartz-based sand finish.
The target? Highlight the rough and ready appearance preferred by Roberto Murgia, who combined genres between tradition and modernity with brilliance. The result is emarkable, with a particularly successful setting: the bricks have been carefully positioned according to an arrangement with solid sections and empty sections supported by the steel grid installed along the glass façade of the extension to the hotel. With this approach, the bricks look as if they are suspended in the air, reflect light over the day, providing passers-by with a constantly changing show. Magic."

The overall project involved extending the original structure of the hotel, a former perfume factory constructed in the early XX th century, with a plant structure. Based on the know-how of Terreal San Marco, we decided to finish the main façade and the staircase connecting to the original building with bricks. A quick look at the terra cotta, such a dominant feature of the historical building.
Terra cotta brick is one of those timeless architectural materials. Terra cotta seemed to become outdated, before coming back in strength, transcended by new technologies! With this project, we therefore designed a complex attachment system using customised moulded Teflon components to support these traditional bricks. The perfect combination of tradition and innovation to reconsider, re-invent, and rediscover terra cotta bricks.
We needed a quality, flexible and fast-reacting supplier to meet the requirements of this very special project. We wanted handmade bricks, in a very pale, almost white, colour, in order to suspend the bricks from a metal structure consisting of hundreds of boxes. This was a substantial challenge… We created many samples and finally found the right format and hue!
