The marked presence of brickwork in the façade and the building interior deepens this impression of a protective cocoon. The architect’s choice here is based on the MAAX brick from Terreal. It is a brick hand-moulded for its material nature with a long length (49 cm) that is perfect for creating horizontal patterns to make a feature of walls. Clean lines stretch out infinitely while being eye-catching in their dynamics; a relief that stands out. How does it work? Thanks to a façade arrangement that pushes certain bricks forward into the spotlight, so that they protrude and detach themselves elegantly from the assembly. It is an unexpected layout that thus accentuates the vibrancy of the façade that is already generated thanks to the texture of the brick and its nuances of colour.
As the level to which they are exposed to sunlight or weathering will differ according to their positioning, the bricks will acquire differing patinas as they age over the years. How to respond perfectly to the intentions of the architect: create a living building whose façade holds never-ending surprises... Wonderful surprises!

EHPAD Residence l'émeraude
Comfort and conviviality. The Ehpad relocation project in Maubourguet, a small town in the Hautes-Pyrenees department, is easily distinguishable thanks to the particularly original structure of its storyboard, bearing the signatures of Joseph Frassanito, Jean-Michel Rombaldi and associated PLN documents through which the works are monitored. What is the bias of the designers? The organisation of the building around a central park that envelopes residents like a cocoon...

InterviewJoseph Frassanito, architect:
“Natural brick and rough concrete: we wanted to use simple materials for this project; ones that are enough in themselves, which do not require window dressing to do their job, ones that we can use in their original format. In an aesthetic approach, of course, but also one that will stand the test of time. The advantage of brick is that it develops a patina over time but does not deteriorate. Furthermore, it is a high-grade material, as borne out by its materiality, its touch, its sensuality, etc. This is even more pronounced if it is left exposed indoors as we have done inside the great hall, which we have named the village square. Here, the idea was also to follow the architectural tradition of the region, with its marked presence of terracotta.
However, we did not wish to set a conventional stage for brickwork: we wanted to attribute to it a certain contemporary nature, to unveil it in a far more visual version.”
