Here terracotta envelops the building, like a skin stretching over it without smothering it. Quite the contrary, as it stays in the background to show the glazed breathing spaces to best advantage and remains unobtrusive in the form of Autan XL sunscreen baguettes, thanks to a subtle composition. Its delicate presence also provides the link between the hospital units, like an indestructible thread connecting the medical imaging, diagnostic testing, radiotherapy, oncology, infusion, nutrition and genetic research departments.
Piterak Slim is also used in an assembly combining two shades, Champagne and Chalk White, in two different finishes, smooth and ridged, to create slight changes in colour and in the way the light is reflected. The façade seems “clad in a woven fabric”, notes the architectural practice, who can pride themselves on having given this building a dream appearance that's beautifully rounded and smooth.

North Bethesda Hospital
Comfort and reassurance: two words that resonate powerfully at the sight of Ohio’s Bethesda North Hospital in the USA. Far from a stereotypical cold, sterilised hospital, GBBN Architects wanted a warm place conducive to a sense of relief. And to achieve this, the designers made superb use of a rounded structure, backed by a major ally with intrinsic warmth: terracotta.

InterviewCassidy Staver, GBBN Architects
“For this leading hospital, it was important to use innovative building technology and top-quality materials, filling patients with confidence without overpowering them through their omnipresence. Clay achieved this project’s goals in every respect: its warmth and texture are an expression of calm and stability. It's a natural material. Indeed, every aspect of the building’s design takes its inspiration from nature. We drew on its soothing, diverting and even potentially healing power”
